1950s rare Iolani Hawaiian Shirt- M/S men's, M/L women's
The artwork for this shirt came from artists in Japan that hand painted exquisite art work for the Iolani line of shirts that was introduced in the mid 1950’s. They would send pictures from Hawaii to the artists who would interpret the early images of Hawaii, putting together collages with different themes.
Barren mountains, possibly inspired by those on Maui at Haleakala fill the background and awapuhi ginger-like flowers blend with branches of hala or pandanus. Shades of tropical turquoise sky work well with the mountains and green hala leaves on an antique cream yellow ground. Iolani only made shirts like this for a few years and then shifted into other shirting directions. Probably because of the amount of time and effort it took to produce.

Condition: Excellent! As with items from this time there are a few faint stains, see pictures of the back. We found one tiny pin hole on the back. The button holes are all in great shape no loose seams or repairs.

This shirt design was only made for a few years. All other shirts from this time and maker are in private collections, we could'nt find a single one for sale.
Notes on maker: Iolani was formed in 1946 by Hawaiian businessman Isamu Takabuki. He sold this company in 1953 to Edith and Keiji Kawakami. The Iolani Sportswear company has been owned by the Kawakami family to this day.
